The present invention relates to a composition comprising diacetyl or a pharmaceutical acceptable salt thereof as an effective ingredient for inhibiting the growth of cancer stem cells, a flavoring composition comprising diacetyl or a pharmaceutical acceptable salt thereof as an effective ingredient, a pharmaceutical composition for suppressing cancer metastasis or for treating or preventing cancer, containing the composition, and a food composition. The diacetyl of the present invention suppresses the growth of breast cancer and colorectal cancer cells and inhibits the formation of breast cancer and colorectal cancer stem cells. In addition, the diacetyl is observed to be inhibitory against the expression of the self-renewal genes, such as Nanog, Sox2, Oct4, and CD44, which are known to be expressed characteristically in breast cancer stem cells, and the production of IL-6 and IL-8, which are known to be involved in the mammosphere formation of breast cancer stem cells, and to interfere with the STAT3 signaling pathway. Further, the diacetyl is found to suppress the production of IL-8, which is known to be involved in tumor sphere formation in colorectal cancer stem cells, and to interfere with the STAT3 signaling pathway.
