Methods and compositions for treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of a viruscomprise administering to a patient antibodies whichreact with regions of viral proteins and result in neutralization ofinfectivity and inactivation of functionally essential events in the lifecycleof the virus. The antibodies recognize viral epitopes which fail to elicit animmune response in man when encountered through infectionor naturally through the environment. In a preferred embodiment, the inventionprovides compositions and methods useful in the treatmentand diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections.
