A system for injecting a drug into a mammalian subject is provided. The system includes an injection system for controlling fluid flow from the fluid reservoir to the needle. A sensor is provided that detects a feature that indicates the fluid pressure of the needle. The injection system controls the flow of fluid into the needle in response to the feature sensed by the sensor and the sensor continuously detects the feature as the needle is inserted into the subject.
