PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a display image on which a position and a travelling direction of an instrument based on a heart valve is visible.SOLUTION: An ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus includes an acquisition unit, a determination unit, a generation unit and a display control unit. The acquisition unit acquires three-dimensional medical image data of a region imaged using an ultrasonic probe and including the heart valve of a subject and a catheter inserted into the heart cavity of the subject. The determination part determines a travelling direction of a tip end part of the catheter by acquiring information on the position and the posture of the tip end part included in the three dimensional medical image data using at least one of shape information showing the shape of the tip end part of the catheter and reflection characteristic information showing ultrasonic reflection characteristics of the tip end part. The generation part generates a display image from the three-dimensional medical image data on the basis of the position and the travelling direction of the tip end part.
