METHOD OF PREVENTION OF TISSUE DAMAGE INDUCED BY NUCLEAR, SOLAR RADIATION AND OTHER RADIATIONS. Inositol hexaphosphate (IP-6) is a polyphosphorylated carbohydrate with potent antioxidant activity to prevent mutagenesis mediated by active oxygen species, cell injury and carcinogenesis. IP-6 also activates DNA repair mechanisms. Sublethal radiation causes DNA damage through the formation of free radicals, reactive oxygen species, and cross-linked pyrimidine bonds that lead to cell proliferation, seizure of the cell cycle and apoptosis. IP-6 and / or inositol and its pharmaceutically acceptable salts and derivatives, including pyrophosphates and citrate derivatives, significantly neutralize the harmful effects of radiation, affecting the progression of the cell cycle in a protective manner (more cells in the G1 protective phase) as well as a decrease in apoptosis and caspase-3 activation. Various salts of IP-6 are used with comparable efficacy and the combination of IP-6 + inositol provides the best protection against radiation-induced cell injury.
