PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stereoscopic endoscope device allowing formation of a 3D image and a 2D image with parallax images photographed by a pair of photographing units, and an image capture method thereof which are capable of improving the quality of the 3D image while suppressing an increase in processing burden of a system as much as possible.SOLUTION: As for a pair of right and left parallax images (a right image IR and a left image IL) photographed by a pair of right and left photographing units 50R and 50L, a period of image capture in a visual field range for use for display of a 3D image is made shorter than that of image capture in a visual field range for use for display of a 2D image. In one method for this purpose, capture of images (a right image IR1 and a left image IL1) in a total visual field range including the visual field range for display of a 2D image, out of visual field ranges of the photographing units 50R and 50L and capture of images (a right image IR2 and a left image IL2) only in the visual field range for display of a 3D image are performed in a specific proportion.
