PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods and injection formulation compositions for treating post-surgical pain which have the same efficacy as current fentanyl injection formulations and reduce central nervous system mediated side effects.SOLUTION: A subject is administered an effective amount of a narcotic emulsion, e.g., fentanyl emulsion, formulation. In certain embodiments, the emulsion formulations include a drug having a narcotic active agent (fentanyl), oil, water and a surfactant. Also provided are methods of producing the emulsion formulations as well as kits that include the emulsion formulations.
