The present disclosure relates to water soluble edible crystals coated with a thin film of edible precious metal that is released in situ in the event of crystal dissolution, thereby making precious metal leaf flakes. The disclosed precious metals coated water soluble edible crystals can exhibit enhanced anti-microbial properties due to oligo dynamic effect, impart longer shelf life and better protection of water soluble edible crystals, and also enhance the visual appeal of water soluble edible crystals. The present disclosure further provides a method for depositing thin film of edible precious metals on water soluble edible crystals using vacuum deposition technique, and an in situ process for making precious metal leaf flakes.
