Disclosed is the use of a compound which is 2-amino-2-[2-(4-octylphenyl)ethyl]propane-1,3-diol (FTY720 / fingolimod) in free form or in a pharmaceutically acceptable salt form (such as the hydrochloride), for the preparation of a medicament for treating an autoimmune disease (such as multiple sclerosis, lupus nephritis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases and psoriasis) in a patient in need thereof, whereby said medicament is adapted for administration of a daily oral dosage of 0.5 mg.
