The present invention relates to chimeric pestiviruses having utility asimmunogenic compositions and vaccineswherein said chimeric pestivirus comprises a bovine viral diarrhea virus whichdoes not express its homologous Ems protein,further wherein said chimeric pestivirus expresses a heterologous Ems proteinderived from another pestivirus, or a natural, syntheticor genetic variant of said heterologous Erns protein. Also described hereinare methods and kits for treating or preventing thespread of bovine viral diarrhea virus infection, as well as methods and kitsfor differentiating between vaccinated and wild-typeinfected animals.
