The invention relates to a tomato plant the fruits of which have an improved shelf-life as compared to the fruits of a wild type tomato plant, obtainable by introgressing the increased shelf life trait from the mutant LePQ58 (deposit accession number NCIMB 41531) into a tomato plant with a normal shelf-life. The increased shelf-life comprises a fruit that shows normal ripening having a fruit firmness at red ripe harvest that is increased by at least 31%, preferably by at least 42%, more preferably by at least 52%, even more preferably by at least 60%, most preferably by at least 70% as compared to a fruit having similar genetic background that lacks the trait of the invention.본 발명은 돌연변이 LePQ58 (기탁 번호 NCIMB 41531)로부터 증가된 보관 수명(shelf life) 형질을 정상 보관 수명을 가진 토마토 식물에 이입(introgressing)함으로써 수득가능한, 야생형 토마토 식물의 열매에 비해 열매의 보관 수명이 개선된 토마토 식물에 관한 것이다. 상기 증가된 보관 수명은, 홍숙 수확기에, 본 발명의 형질이 결여된 비슷한 유전적 백그라운드를 가진 열매와 비교하여, 31% 이상, 바람직하게는 42% 이상, 보다 바람직하게는 52% 이상, 더욱 바람직하게는 60% 이상, 가장 바람직하게는 70% 이상 증가된 열매 견고성을 가지며 정상적인 숙성을 나타내는 열매를 포함한다.
