Provided are electrokinetically-altered fluids (gas-enriched electrokineticfluids) comprising an ionic aqueous solutionof charge-stabilized oxygen-containing nanostructures in an amount sufficientto provide modulation of at least one of cellularmembrane potential and cellular membrane conductivity, and therapeuticcompositions and methods for use in treating inflammatoryneurodegenerative condition or disease or at least one symptom thereof. Theelectrokinetically-altered fluids or therapeuticcompositions and methods include electrokinetically-altered ioinic aqueousfluids optionally in combination with other therapeuticagents. Particular aspects provide for regulating or modulating intracellularsignal transduction associated with said inflammatoryresponses by modulation of at least one of cellular membranes, membranepotential, membrane proteins such as membranereceptors, including but not limited to G-Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCR),and intercellular junctions (e.g., tight junctions, gapjunctions, zona adherins and desmasomes). Other embodiments include particularroutes of administration or formulations for theelectrokinetically-altered fluids (e.g., electrokinetically-altered gas-enriched fluids and solutions) and therapeutic compositions.
