Fishing apparatus comprises an inflated balloon float 96 attached to a fishing line 98 and fishing rig, and a detonator 100 to rupture the balloon. The detonator 100 is activated by striking the fishing line 98. The inflated float 96 is thereby ruptured by being pierced with a pin mounted within the detonator 100 and which is caused to penetrate the balloon float 96 by the energy of the striking. The balloon float 96 is used to carry the rig through the water until it reaches the desired location, whereupon the detonator 100 is triggered and the balloon deflates. The fishing rig then sinks and takes up its intended position in the water.
