The anvil assembly includes a center rod assembly 114, a head assembly 112 pivotal relative to the center rod assembly between an operative position and a tilted position, and a mechanism for selectively maintaining the head assembly in the operative position. The head assembly includes: a housing 120； a post 130 extending proximally from the housing and defining a proximal annular groove； and a backup member 140 operably supported about the post.
