The device and method enable mushrooms to be gathered and involve first and second (7,8) engagement componetns which secure the mushroom (1) head (2). Each mushroom also has a foot (3) and a base segment or mycelium (4). Through the mushroom runs a center line (5). The harvesting device (6) has first and second engagement components, at the outer ends of which are contact rollers (9,10). A common operative component (11) causes the engagement components to move in relation to the mushroom. The component also has a counter holder (12), which with a flexible contact surface (13) also engages the head of the mushroom. An auxiliary line (14) intersects vertically the connecting line of the contact positions of the contact rollers with the mushroom head and encloses an angle (alpha) with the center line through the mushroom.
