The turf is planted as small plugs of turf configured generally as blocks of a 5 size about 50mm along each side. The turf plugs are generated by cutting strips of turf into small sections to form the plugs. The turf strips may be of the type typically used to establish "roll-on" lawns. The machine (10) comprises a mobile structure (15) having ground wheels (17), a forward section (21) and a trailing section (23). The forward section (21) defines a platform (24) on which a supply 10 of turf rolls can be stored in a stockpile and from which a worker can operate. The trailing section (23) incorporates a station (25) at which a second worker is located to perform the function of a driver for the machine. The machine (10) further comprises a cutting station (30) above the platform (24) and a planting station (60) below the platform. The turf rolls are taken from the stockpile placed 15 one at a time at the cutting station (3)0 by the worker on the platform (24). At the cutting station (30), each turf roll is unwound so that the turf strip assumes its former flat condition and then cut into turf blocks which are delivered to the planting station (60) at which they are planted in the ground (11) at intervals in spaced apart rows. 20NN U) CvO cu I(00 C14(0 0(0 00) 0 00 N-D CV
