An apparatus for collecting a biological sample in a patient's esophagus includes a collection portion that can be swallowed to collect a sample at a collection site in the esophagus. The stylet is connected to the collection portion to place the collection portion on the back of the patient's throat for swallowing. The device may have a collector having a first shaft end and a second shaft end. The sleeve is at the first shaft end. The device may have at least one tissue collection protrusion extending from the outer surface of the collection portion, a first sidewall of the tissue collection protrusion, and a second wall of the tissue collection protrusion. The method of collecting a biological sample includes moving a swallowable collection portion with a stylet to the back of the patient's throat for swallowing.
