Compositions useful for treating an individual with nicotine dependence comprising a combination of an &alpha；3&bgr；4 nicotinic receptor antagonist and a nicotine metabolite are disclosed. More particularly, compositions comprising cotinine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof are disclosed. Methods of alleviating nicotine withdrawal symptoms and/or tobacco usage by administration of these compositions are also disclosed.
