A viral vector is provided which includes a nucleic acid molecule comprising a sequence encoding a propeptide and the active portion of GLP-1, wherein, when expressed, the N-terminal amino acid of GLP-1 immediately follows the C-terminal amino acid of the propeptide. In desired embodiments, the subject is a cat or dog.
