Light-receiving elements each receive reflected light when the skin surface is irradiated by the light-emitting elements, and output a signal. The CPU determines an appropriate combination of light-emitting elements and a light-receiving element(s) based on the output signal from each of the light-receiving elements. A pulse rate calculating section calculates a pulse rate based on the signal outputted from any of the light-receiving elements in the appropriate combination.
