The present invention provides methods and pharmaceutical compositions for preventing or treating alopecia, for example, chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA). The pharmaceutical compositions of the present invention include vitamin D compounds as effective doses of vitamin D compounds in formulations that deliver the vitamin D compound locally to the epidermal layer but are substantially prevented from being delivered to the dermal layer.
