Embodiments of the present disclosure concern therapeutic vectors and cells that target certain cancer cells but do not other cells having the same antigen. In specific embodiments, the methods and compositions of the disclosure concern cells having a CD138-specific chimeric antigen receptor whose expression is under the control of environment-specific regulation. In specific embodiments the environment is hypoxia.
