PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyaxial bone anchoring device having an improved rod coupling design to allow suitability for various rods.SOLUTION: A polyaxial bone anchoring device is provided with: a first coupling part 13, 13, 130 for supporting a rod 100, 101 in a recess 9, 9 and a second coupling part 21, 21 for applying a pressure to the rod when the rod is within the recess, the second coupling part 21, 21 extending horizontally from a coaxial bore 6 into the recess 9, 9 between legs 10, 11. The polyaxial bone anchoring device further includes an engaging device 27 for applying a pressure to the second coupling part 21, 21 to fix the rod 100, 101 within the recess 9, 9.
