Wearable device 102 e.g. smart-watch has electromyography (EMG) electrodes 116 in contact with the skin of a user when worn, electrical signals from which being combined when the user contacts housing bezel electrode 118 to complete an electrocardiography (ECG) loop. The signals may be combined with an electrical or software switch. The ECG system may give a heart rate reading 130 or determine an electrocardiogram 132. The EMG system may monitor muscular movements 126 or gesture inputs 128 and the device may dynamically switch between systems based upon detected user activity. The device may also comprise a photoplethysmogram (PPG) system having LED 134 and optical detector 136 detecting reflected light to determine the users heart rate. The arrangement ensures measurement between two extremities (opposite hands or wrists) and maximises electrode-skin contact area, thus improving accuracy.
