The invention provides a medical imaging apparatus (1) for computer tomography, comprising a scanning section (2), at least a first housing frame (4) and driving means (8, 9, 10), said scanning section (2) comprising: an essentially toroidal scanning section housing (18) with at least one uncovered axial surface (31), and at least one radiation source (22) and at least one radiation detector (24), each of which are disposed, rotably with respect to a rotation axis (12), inside of the scanning section housing (18), the rotation axis (12) thereby defining an axial direction, wherein the scanning section (2) is disposed movably in the axial direction with respect to the first housing frame (4), and wherein the driving means (8, 9, 10) are configured to move the scanning section (2) along the axial direction with respect to the first housing frame (4) to perform a telescopic motion, such that: said at least one uncovered axial surface (31) of the scanning section housing (18) is moved along the axial direction, and at least a part of an axial motion of said at least one radiation source (22) and said at least one radiation detector (24) during an operation of the medical imaging apparatus (1) is provided by the telescopic motion. The invention further provides the use of such a medical imaging apparatus (1) in combination with a mobile stretcher (48), and a vehicle (56), in particular an ambulance, with such a medical imaging apparatus (1).
