Low molecular weight (1000 to 5000 Daltons) chondroitin sulfate (CS) produced by chemical sulfate and subsequent depolymerization of a non-sulfated chondroitin backbone obtained by biotechnological techniques is disclosed. The disclosed CS is predominantly monosulfated at position 6, little sulfate at position 4-, and has a mono / disulfated disaccharide ratio and charge density similar to native CS.
