A method for detecting a hypoglycemic state in a patient, comprising the steps of: monitoring a patient’s heart rate to provide a heart rate signal； determining a time-shifted time sequence as the difference between a heart rate signal and a time-shifted version of a heart rate signal make a conclusion about the onset of a hypoglycemic event if this difference exceeds the first predetermined threshold level； give an alarm if a conclusion is made about such an attack. 2. The method according to claim 1, comprising: filtering the heart rate signal with a low-pass filter to provide a heart rate trend, and a time-shifted time sequence is defined as the difference between the heart rate trend and the time-shifted heart rate trend. 3. The method according to claim 1 or 2, comprising the step of changing the first predetermined threshold level depending on one or more measured parameters of the patient. The method of claim 3, wherein the patient parameter comprises a measured blood glucose level. The method according to claim 4, wherein at a high measured level of glucose in the blood, the first threshold level is adjusted to reduce the likelihood of making a conclusion about the onset of a hypoglycemic event.
