A method for inhibiting or reducing tumor growth is disclosed. A composition containing at least one selected oncolytic virus is administered into the patient's tumor. The virus kills cancerous cells and induces systemic and persistent anti-tumor immunity, which is also compatible with other cancer treatments. Also disclosed are methods for creating synthetic viruses for targeting cancerous tumors.
