Disclosed is a method and apparatus for assessing sufficiency of ventilation from a measured flow of breathable gas. The method comprises accessing a measure of a flow of breathable gas representative of patient respiration by a processor； deriving measures of ventilation from the measure of flow； determining, a histogram based on the measures of ventilation and evaluating the histogram in the processor to indicate occurrence of hypoventilation or hyperventilation.
