A bale gripper attachment is disclosed. When lining up the arms of load handling gripper with a load it is desirable for the arms to maintain a reasonably predictable position. To maintain the arms with proportional offset to the centre line of the gripper an equalizer bar is provided. As the vehicle reverses the arms have sufficient play (due to a lost motion mechanism) so that if the vehicle does not reverse straight the arms can accommodate lateral movement so that adjacent bales are not damaged and retraction of the bale is not impeded. The gripper includes a pair of arms (2, 3-Fig 1) attached to a frame that are moved by an actuator to grip a bale. The alignment of the arms is controlled by an equaliser mechanism (5) with some lost motion (21, 22) to allow some play in that alignment. The equaliser bar will ensure that the arms have the same general relative rotation with respect to frame but allow an amount of &ldquoplay&rdquo. As shown in figure 4 the arms are rotated to the right with the centre line between arms A being rotated at an angle x with respect to line C normal to frame 1 when pin 21 is positioned to the left of slot 22.
