A ligament balancer 10 for a knee placed in 90 degrees of flexion is disclosed. It comprises a first guide portion 14 having a first guide hole 26 extending there through, and a second guide portion 16 having a second guide hole 28 extending there through. The first and second guide portions 14, 16 are moveable with respect to each other along a movement axis. In use the movement axis is substantially parallel to the anterior/posterior axis of a distal femoral surface. The device may further comprise a tibial location plate 12 that is associated with the first guide portion 14 and an intramedullary rod 18 that is associated with the second guide portion 16. A tibial spacer 34 can also be used in conjunction with the balancer. The two guide portions can move relative to one another using a hex pinion drive 22 and associated mounting post 20. Also disclosed is a ligament balancer 10 for a knee, which comprises a tibial location plate 12 and an intramedullary rod 18.
