A sensor to be placed in contact with the skin 12 of a user for acquiring physiological signals includes a conductive layer 2 to be placed in contact with the skin for receiving the signals, the conductive layer comprising a conductive fabric of interlaced or interwoven conductive fibres and non-conductive fibres forming a plurality of orifices throughout the conductive fabric. An electrical connector 5 is connected to the conductive layer to transfer the signals to an analysis system. The conductive layer includes the electrode portion 3 and a track portion 4 which is connected to the connector 5. To gently hold the sensor on the skin without adhesives the plurality of orifices 6 are formed in the conductive layer throughout the electrode area, with each orifice filled with silicone rubber without the use of adhesives. The silicone rubber only covers the orifice areas of the electrode. The sensor may be adhered to the cloth 7 of a garment so that the garment serves to hold the electrode against the skin of the chest of the wearer.
