A surgical microscope system for use in a medical procedure. The surgicalmicroscope system is controlled in a first mode of operation corresponding toaphase of the medical procedure and defining at least one setting for adjustinga setof adjustable optics. While in the first mode of operation, the surgicalmicroscopesystem automatically determines, from a captured image, an indication that asecond mode of operation is relevant. The mode of operation is switched to thesecond mode of operation.
