A composition for providing a barrier between tissues and/or organs during or after a surgical procedure. The composition is a flowable solution of a hydrophobically-modified chitosan, wherein the hydrophobic modifications are selected to allow for adherence to tissue, cohesiveness of the composition upon application to tissue, and degradation over about two weeks after application.
