PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a measuring apparatus and a method capable of shortening a measuring time by appropriately controlling measurement mode based on determination about presence of a measurement target held by a shape keeping member in a scanning region of a probe, and to allow appropriate measurement of respective measurement targets.SOLUTION: A measuring apparatus which measures a measurement target 1 held by a shape keeping member 2, includes: a probe 4 a memory part 10 and a determination means 11. The measuring apparatus, based on determination of the determination means 11, controls measurement operation. The probe 4 includes an electromechanical conversion device which receives an acoustic wave from a measurement target 1 held by the shape keeping member 2 through the shape keeping member and converts it to a reception signal, and scanning is made along a surface of the shape keeping member 2. The memory part 10 stores the reception signal.
