An imaging endoscopy system 10, and a method of assembly thereof, comprises a base unit 12 (intended to be re-usable), a hand controller 14, an umbilical section 16 releasably connecting the base unit and the hand controller and an insertion section 18. The insertion section has a proximal end 20 connected to the hand controller and a distal end 22 having a steering section 24 and a distal tip 26. The hand controller includes at least one steering control 28 for controlling bending of the steering section and the distal tip includes a light source (82, Fig 14) for illumination of a region of tissue of interest and an imaging chip (84, Fig 14) for imaging the region of tissue of interest. Each of the hand controller, umbilical section and insertion section are single use disposable and may be provided in a plurality of sealed containers in sterile condition. The system may also include a single use confirmation system and a steering control which controls one or more steering wires.
