PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a method for preparing a hydrous, cryopreserved sample that is enclosed in a sample container, wherein at least a sample material is introduced into the sample container that is subsequently sealed pressure-tight and cooled by a cryogen, and a device for carrying out the method, so as to ensure that pressure is maintained during freezing and that a desirable, usable region of the sample can be obtained.SOLUTION: The container is cooled in a temporal and spatial sequence so that the sacrificial region of container contents is initially solidified and, only subsequently thereto, the rest of the container contents is solidified.
