A transseptal insertion device is provided that includes a device housing, a pusher slidably disposed within the device housing, and a guide element extending from the pusher. The device housing is inserted into the right atrium of the patient's heart, after which the guide element is advanced from the device housing toward the atrial septum and provides access to the left atrium. A needle carried by a catheter inserted therethrough facilitates stable atrial septal puncture. The guide element is formed in a mesh form or as a ring. The pusher and / or the guide element is optionally inflatable.
