A self-standing bedrail 10 comprises a base 12 and an upstanding portion 14 providing a handrail 46 locatable next to a bed, and a securing arrangement 16 with engaging elements 18A, 18C moveable along the upstanding portion 14 to engage a bed structure and to secure the bedrail to the bed. In one aspect, at least one engaging element 18A is moveable independently of another engaging element 18C. The engaging elements 18A & C may secure the bedrail to the bed by abutting against the underside of the bed structure. In another aspect, a lift mechanism is provided to hold the upstanding portion 14 to a raised position relative to the base 12. In another aspect, the engaging element 18A, 18C comprises a clamp to be fastened to the upstanding portion 14. In another aspect, the lift mechanism is handle-operated and the handle comprises a non-actuating configuration. The aspects facilitate securing the bedrail to a bed and facilitate removing the bedrail.
