The present invention provides an alternative cost effective respiratory monitoring device with an added advantage of having self illuminating indicators which can be used in dark like in MRI suites and not requiring any electrical supply. It consists of a face mask (1), a connector (2), main frame, self illuminating visual indicator, auditory indicator, inlet for fresh gas flow and a resistance valve. There is movement of the bobbin/disc in visual indicator in synchrony with the respiration of the patient. Thus, immediate identification of respiration rate, lung volume and apnea can be recognized at the patients side or some remote distance there from. This allows.monitoring even if the anesthesiologist is away from the patient for any reason whatsoever. It also allows immediate attention to a respiratory problem and as many as two or three minutes prior to indication of such problems by pulse oximeters.
