Apparatus, consisting of a probe with a temperaturesensor and a transducer in contact with a livingsubject's tissue. A power supply delivers electricalpower to the transducer for tissue ablation. A controllerreceives a signal from the temperature sensor and inresponse outputs a tissue temperature. During a firsttime period the power supply delivers no more than afirst target power to the transducer, and reduces thepower when a first maximum allowable temperature of thetissue is exceeded. During a transition time period thepower supply delivers no more than a second target power,while reducing the delivered power when the first maximumallowable temperature of the tissue is exceeded. During asecond time period the power supply delivers no more thanthe second target power, while reducing the deliveredpower when a second maximum allowable temperature, lessthan the first maximum allowable temperature, isexceeded.
