Methods andapparatus for controlling fecalodors in an enclosed space, suchas a pit latrine, include providingan oxidizer, such as a catalyticheater and an optional mechanicalventilation unit, such as an inlinefan, both flow connected to a vault(pit) of the latrine. The heater isalso connected to a source of fuel, for example, propane. Fresh air isdrawn through vents in the latrinehousing and thereafter throughtoilets in the latrine and throughthe vault, providing oxygen for thereaction. The fan and/or oxidationprocess draws both fresh air andaccompanying odorous compoundsdirectly from the latrine and intothe oxidizer wherein the odorouscomponents are substantiallydestroyed.
