A collector (46) for connection to a medical / surgical waste collection unit, the waste collection unit having a receiver (44) for receiving the collector, said collector comprising: a housing (158, 164) defining a empty space, said housing including: at least one splice (48) for receiving a suction conduit (50) defining a fluid communications path in the empty space; a base (168) of the housing that is the proximal end of the housing; and an outlet opening (170) formed in the base (168) of the housing, through which the fluid can flow from the empty space, the outlet opening sized to receive a joint (136) integrated in the receiver ( 44), in which the housing (158, 164), including the base (168) of the housing, is adapted to be rotated in the receiver; and a drip system (174a) installed in the outlet opening (170) of the housing, the drip system having: a valve (187, 190) disposed on the outlet opening, which is normally closed to selectively block fluid flow outside the outlet opening (170) of the housing and positioned to be actuated by the receiver connection so that, after the connection is established in the outlet opening, the connection opens the valve; and a base (176a) of the drip system with interior surfaces (272, 274, 276); wherein the housing includes a gasket (187, 274) which, when the junction (136) of the receiver is in the outlet opening (170), establishes a barrier between the housing and the junction (136) of the receiver; characterized in that: the base (176a) of the drip system is formed to have: a first inner annular surface (272) that tapers inwardly from the proximal end of the base (176a); a lip (274) that extends circumferentially around the inside of the base (176a) and, the lip, in cross section, has a convex profile, in which the first annular surface (272) tapers inward towards the lip ( 274) and the inner diameter of said lip is smaller than the outer diameter of the junction (136) of the receiver, so that the lip (274) functions as
