The present invention relates to a sterilizer unit for sterilizing an absorber (30) such as a sponge. The sanitizer unit includes a container (12) providing an immersion position (22) and a discharge position (26) for maintaining a sterilizing agent preferentially. The sterilizer unit includes a discharge unit (14) for interacting with the vessel, the discharge unit defining a compression compartment (28) which can be held in an absorber. The discharge unit can additionally move between a release position where the absorber can be located within the compression compartment and a compression position where the discharge unit applies compressive force on the absorber inside the compression compartment. The compression compartment in use can be located in the immersion position of the container when the discharge unit is located in its release position so that the absorber absorbs a significant amount of bactericide.
