A server comprising:a server memory configured to store a sterilization status of a surgical instrument；a network link configured to couple the server to a console having a console memory, the console configured to:register the surgical instrument based on identifying data received from the surgical instrument；receive the sterilization status from the server； andstore a registration status of the surgical instrument in the console memory, the registration status being indicative of the surgical instrument being previously registered with the console.
