The present disclosure relates to technical field of regenerative cell therapy for treatment of kidney diseases. Provided herein are methods of preparing a therapeutic composition for generating a regenerative response to a kidney of a subject, therapeutic compositions prepared according to the methods, and uses of the prepared therapeutic compositions. The therapeutic compositions for generating a regenerative response are produced by preparing a heterogeneous renal cell population enriched for renal tubular cells from a kidney sample of subject. The prepared heterogeneous renal cell population is characterized as having a regenerative potential by determining that greater than 18% of the cells of the population express GGT-1, greater than 80% of the cells of the population express a cytokeratin, and that cells of the population secrete VEGF and KIM-1. The enriched heterogeneous renal cell population, characterized as having a regenerative potential, is formulated into a therapeutic composition for administration to the subject.
