A temporary ostomy applianceis disclosed, including a catheter forextending through the abdominal wall intothe intestine. The catheter may be a transcecalcatheter for extending through the cecalvalve into the ileum. A portion of a catheterthat extends through the cecal valve is madecollapsible when the catheter is empty. Thecollapsed portion expands to permit passageof effluent. A balloon carried on the catheteris preformed with a shape and size in orderto permit inflation without elastic stretchingof the balloon wall material. A filament isprovided for permitting a portion of thecatheter to be fastened to internal bodytissue by surgical sutures or staples. In orderto release the fastening without furthersurgery, the filament is withdrawn bypulling on a proximal portion outside thebody.
