The device comprises a clamp (60) having at least first and second elongate clamping portions (62,64) adapted to be placed on opposite sides of the appendage. The first and second elongate clamping portions respectively have ends coupled together with respective resilient urging members (66,68) configured to urge at least one of the first and second elongate clamping portions toward the other of the first and second elongate clamping portions from an open position into a clamping position to occlude the appendage. The clamp is configured to receive the appendage in the open position and occlude the hollow interior of the appendage in the clamping position. The first and second elongate clamping portions have tissue engaging surfaces (94) for engaging the appendage in the clamping position. The tissue engaging surfaces promote tissue ingrowth in the clamping position.
