The present invention relates to: a pharmaceutical composition and a food composition containing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) as an active ingredient for preventing and treating obesity or impaired glucose tolerance and a method for preventing and treating obesity or impaired glucose tolerance by using the same. The NAD of the present invention improves an abnormal food intake pattern of an obesity animal model induced by high fat diet, increases movement of the obesity animal model, and thus has an effect of preventing increase of the weight resulting from high calorie diet. In addition, the NAD exhibits an effect of improving glucose tolerance. Mover, the NAD can maintain the effects, stated above, with a much smaller amount than an amount of precursors of existing NAD.
