PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve downsizing and cost reduction in an endoscope.SOLUTION: An endoscope includes: lenses L1, L2, L3; an image pickup device 33 which has a square outer shape with one side having a length identical with a length of a diameter of the lenses L1, L2, L3; a device cover glass 43 which covers an imaging surface 41 of the image pickup device 33 and has a square outer shape having one side with a length identical with the length of one side of the image pickup device 33; a transmission cable 31 connected to the image pickup device 33; illumination means provided along the lenses L1, L2, L3 and the transmission cable 31; and a tubular and flexible sheath 61 covering the lenses L1, L2, L3, the image pickup device 33, a part of the illumination means, and the transmission cable 31.
